Beer or whisky: choose the right tracking unit
An illustrative RFID thought experiment about why beer may fit case or keg tracking while selected whisky bottles may justify an item-level pilot.
This MADE-UP CASE STUDY asks a practical question: beer or whisky—which is the better candidate for item-level RFID? The answer is not “RFID works on one and fails on the other.” The better answer is to choose the level where identity is valuable and reads can be tested.
Beer: change the unit
An individual beer can combines metal, liquid, high volume, and often low unit value. Liquid can absorb RF energy, metal can alter the field, and tagging every can may solve the wrong operational problem. A case, pallet, or reusable keg may be the more useful first tracking unit.
That does not mean beer cannot be read. Tag choice, placement, packaging, orientation, reader, antenna, and read zone all require testing. A reusable keg may call for a purpose-built on-metal tag; a case or pallet label may better match the receiving question.
Whisky: test the item-level case
A filled whisky bottle is also a liquid-filled object, so it is not automatically easy to read. A selected higher-value bottle may nevertheless justify more care in tag selection, placement, and exception handling. A neck, closure, shrink-band, or offset placement could be evaluated, but no position should be treated as guaranteed without a test.
The useful question is whether the business benefits from identifying every selected bottle, not whether a bottle is technologically magical.
An imaginary receiving workflow
The fictional Made-Up Bottle Shop in the source concept expects twelve bottles, observes eleven, and reviews one missing identity. Those counts are example demo data. They are not measured results, a customer case study, or a deployment at Sapporo, Nikka, or any other named organization.
The comparison can be implemented as expected versus observed: define the order, read the tagged units, resolve identities to records, and review missing or unexpected items. DropRFID can support this kind of configured scan-and-order workflow, but it does not make a beverage deployment turnkey.

The durable lesson is simple: do not start with the smallest possible item. Start with the unit that answers the receiving question and can be read dependably in the real environment.
That recommendation can change as the workflow changes. A distributor may care about cases and pallets at receiving, while a specialty retailer may care about selected bottles during cycle counting. The same product can therefore have more than one sensible identity layer, provided the records and read zones are kept distinct.
Before a pilot, document the question, the candidate unit, the tag placement, the expected exception, and the evidence needed to call the test useful. Avoid promising a read rate, distance, labor reduction, or ROI until an approved test measures it.
